First one in 2016

I've spotted the first one this year - a male in flight.

As it hovered for a while this makes me think I may have a female somewhere which is good news.

A very late female

Found a female at 6.30 this morning on Addiscombe Road. Very dopey and probably almost dead. Moved to a place of safety. I've never seen one this late in the year.

Magpies and handling.

A friend of mine had one fall on to her patio after it was dropped by a Magpie. Two of the birds circled hoping to retrieve.

The beetle, a large male, was a bit stunned but seemed to recover.

If you worry about how to pick one up see:

- take care also that the feet don't get stuck to blades of grass.

Should you need to carry it any distance, rest it on the back of your hand, not the palm, as the feet seem to get a bit stuck. I've no idea why!

Only half!

Just found the rear end of a beetle by the old stump. Looks like something nabbed it as it emerged. I'm not sure what by though. Magpie are the principle predators but they tend to go for the rear end and leave the front.

Ah well, if there's one then others are surely emerging.

New Habitat

The beetles start to appear mid-May to mid-June but running a bit late this year.

Am wondering if I'm actually going to get any or whether last year's hatch was the last one. It depends on when eggs were last laid at the site.

I've built a second home for them where eggs will hopefully be laid. Adults beetles won't emerge until 2020 and beyond though. If you think the beetles are big then the larvae can grow to over 4" long!

Clearing the runway

Saw another female on the grass yesterday, then later in the evening a female trying to take off from our creeper infected trellis.

The creeper was evidently giving difficulties and eventually she fell off.

Flying females are, incidentally, fairly unusual.

Realising that beetles need to climb in order to fly I've cleared all the creeper and vine to make it easier for them to climb.
